In July 2009 Walmart announced plans to create a global sustainability index that will give consumers an idea of how green or sustainable the products they buy are. This sustainability index will provide customers  with product information in a simple, convenient, easy to understand rating, so they can make choices and consume in a more sustainable way. How that information is delivered to consumers is still undetermined, but could take the form of a numeric score, color code or some other type of label.

As a first step, Walmart’s suppliers will have to evaluate their companies’ sustainability. More info can be found here.
