Electric car is a hoax resized 600

Electric cars have been around since the mid 19th century. They enjoyed popularity until early twentieth century when advances in internal combustion engine technology made it possible for the average person to own a car that is far superior in every single way - cost, range, speed - save one.

Pundits claim that the electric car is environmentally friendly because it runs on electricity and not not fossil fuels. We should thus support the electric car even though it costs more and has less range and speed. But isn't a major percentage of electricity produced from fossil fuels like coal in North America? In the US, around 70% of electricity is generated from coal and natural gas.

So the electric car is essentially a coal powered car. The one main difference between the electric car and the traditional automobile is the release location of the emissions. With the electric car the emissions are released at the power plant where electricity is generated and not where the car is located.

The electric car is no better than the conventional automobile in terms of its eco-friendliness. Check out this interview of Vinod Khosla. He echoes the same point of view at the 28 minute mark.

It's a valid point you make. But what if electric cars were powered with energy produced from renewable, clean sources? Wouldn't they then live up to their green reputation and contribute to decarbonize the economy?

Yes, if the energy is from renewable resources. But that needs to come first. No point in innovating on the electric car if the energy isn't renewable.

I just want to comment on the point when you mentioned that electric car speed is way less than gas engine cars, while that was true in the past, now a day electric related technology so advanced to the point that they just came up with an electric sport car that is capable of producing "1,000 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque from 0 to 60 in just 2.5 seconds. Top speed on this exotic sports car is 208 mph." , you are right when it come to the price and range , however range could also expanded Specially if these electric cars, are converted to become hybrid [electric/H2O] (hydrogen extracted from water)

The other big issue with electric cars that no one seems to address is the cost of replacement batteries - and the disposal of batteries.

Electric cars are not the answer...

The electric car would be laughable if it were not so tragic. There are two alleged reasons for having electric cars: Reduce carbon dioxide pollution. Reduce the need for FOREIGN oil. It should be obvious to ANYONE that the electricity that is used for charging the batteries comes from electric generators most of which are driven by engines, most of which use fossil fuels! Thus, electric cars will have minimal effect on the reduction of pollution!

To reduce the need for foreign oil it is necessary to find more sources of oil within the U,S. or use natural gas, which we have plenty of.

How about so-called GREEEN energy from plants. This is another farce!

Most people do NOT understand that it takes energy to produce the ethanol! The land must be plowed, seeded and fertized, and then the plants have be harvested. All of these require the use of gasoline driven farm machinery. Then, the harvested grain must be refined to obtain ethanol. All of these require energy! That amount of energy exceeds what which is obtained from the Ethanol! In addition, the Ethanol also outputs carbon dioxide! So will someone please tell me how so-called green energy reduces pollution or the need for fossil fuels???

Yes I fully agree that biofuels arent the solution either. There is just so much of confusion out there!

I accept that electricity is dependent on coal/ fossil fuels at the moment, but I think we need to keep trying and as the designs get better... well, how about the way a car battery recharges as the car moves! Maybe one day the car will run on electricity that it continues to re-charge under its own movement.
